Character History: Baymax on the Disney Wiki

~Baymax is designed and built by Tadashi Hamada
~Tadashi introduces Baymax to Hiro, in an effort to get Hiro interested in doing something more with his intelligence than mostly illegal bot-fighting
~Tadashi is killed in the exhibition hall fire; Baymax ends up in the bedroom Tadashi and Hiro once shared
~Hiro accidentally reactivates Baymax who then wanders off, following Hiro's remaining microbot
~Hiro catches up to Baymax; they encounter and are attacked by the masked villain, Yokai
~Hiro and Baymax report the encounter to the police, but the cops don't believe them
~Baymax downloads a database on personal loss in an effort to help Hiro
~Hiro takes matters into his own hands, programming Baymax with karate skills and constructing his first armor suit
~Hiro and Baymax go after Yokai again and meet up with Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Gogo, and Fred. The group barely escapes with their lives.
~After regrouping at Fred's house, the group decides to become superheroes
~Hiro builds Baymax a new, much better suit of armor; the others get super hero equipment too.
~Baymax takes Hiro flying during a test of the armor to boost Hiro's mood
~Baymax's enhanced scanner detects Yokai and the group goes to a small island to find him
~The group encounters Yokai, but their uncoordinated attack fails
~Yokai is revealed to be Professor Robert Callaghan, and Hiro, enraged that the Professor allowed Tadashi to die while saving himself, removes Baymax's healthcare chip and orders Baymax to destroy Callaghan
~Baymax is stopped by Honey Lemon replacing his chip, and apologies
~Hiro flies off with Baymax, still bent on revenge, leaving the others behind
~Baymax shows Hiro footage of Tadashi taken during Baymax's testing phases; this snaps him out of his desire for revenge, as that's not what Tadashi would have wanted
~The rest of the group rejoin Hiro and Baymax and make up
~They discover that Callaghan is out for revenge against Alister Krei, who he holds responsible for the loss of his daughter
~The group confronts Callaghan when he attacks Krei's new building complex using both Hiro's microbots and the portal device that resulted in the loss of Callaghan's daughter
~The group comes together and successfully defeats Callaghan, but the portal becomes unstable
~Baymax detects signs of life from within the portal: Callaghan's daughter. He and Hiro enter the portal to save her.
~They successfully retrieve her pod, but Baymax is struck by a large chunk of floating debris and most of his armor destroyed.
~To save Hiro and Callaghan's daughter, Baymax has to make Hiro deactivate him so that he can use his remaining power and rocket fist to get them to safety
~Both of them emerge from the portal just in time, but Baymax is believed to be lost
~Hiro enters San Fransokyo Technical Institute and discovers Baymax's personality chip hidden in the closed fingers of the rocket fist
~Hiro uploads Baymax's personality chip to Tadashi's computer; Baymax recognizes Hiro and happily greets him
~Hiro rebuilds Baymax's body, but ignores Baymax's advice about running proper diagnostics
~After being powered up, Baymax's body goes haywire and runs off
~The body runs loose in the city until it's found by Yama and his men
~To get Baymax's body back, Hiro is forced to steal a paperweight sculpture from Professor Grandville's office
~He gets Baymax's body back and resumes rebuilding Baymax, this time running proper diagnostics
~Hiro fits the endo-skeleton with vinyl coverings and reinserts the chip, restoring Baymax to life
~Hiro adds a super-hero chip to Baymax's healthcare matrix
~Yama unleashes an army of knockoff Baymaxes, using designs copied while Baymax's body was in his possession
~Hiro begins rebuilding Baymax's armor, while the rest of the Big Hero 6 deal with the knockoffs
~With only the lower parts of the armor completed, the two discovers Yama and several knockoff sneaking around the school, looking for the sculpture which they discover has properties that make any electronics dangerous
~With his vinyl coverings removed, Baymax impersonates one of the evil knockoffs, getting the sculpture before Yama
~Yama cries in pain, activating Baymax's healthcare protocols and he is discovered
~Hiro saves Baymax, but Yama gets away with the sculpture
~Hiro quickly finishes Baymax's armor and they suit up to join their friends
~Yama loses the sculpture when it burns through his pocket; it then attaches to a train, making it speed out of control
~Baymax flies the team to rescue the rain and passengers
~Baymax removes the sculpture from the train, but it causes his systems to overload and Baymax's rocket boots to launch both he and Hiro into the sky out of control
~ Once above the clouds, Hiro launches the sculpture into the sky moments before it explodes
~Due to the overload Baymax's systems crash and they fall, but Hiro manages to reboot him in time to save them
~After this, Baymax, Hiro, and their friends devote themselves to being full time super heroes

Character Personality: Baymax cares. That is the basis of his programming and personality. A medical robot by design, he sees virtually everyone as a patient and sees it as his duty to look after their physical and emotional well being. Originally, he didn't factor emotional well being into things, being interested purely in maintaining people's physical health, which led to a few awkward moments and made him somewhat difficult to work with, but interaction with Hiro and his friends (plus downloading a database on personal loss) has helped him develop beyond that.

While the jury is still out as to how much Baymax can actually feel, there's definitely more to him than simple programming. Apart from simply being medically intelligent and a capable diagnostic nurse (his original function), Baymax is also warm, caring, and extremely devoted to his friends, particularly Hiro. Part of this seems to come from the connection between Hiro and his late brother Tadashi, who created Baymax, but it's clear that Hiro has since found his own place in Baymax's robotic heart. The safety and well being of Hiro and his friends is Baymax's first, and in many cases his only priority. Baymax views himself, or at least his body, as being ultimately expendable. Indeed, as long as the primary datacard containing his personality is intact, Baymax's body can be repaired or even rebuilt completely as needed, but still, this says something about Baymax's self-image.

Being a robot, Baymax has a tendency to think rather literally, occasionally requiring various metaphors or concepts to be explained to him, but luckily he's a fast learner. Even if he'd not fast anywhere else. Baymax tends to be careful in everything he does, and slow and considering in motion. In fact, he's stated specifically that he's not fast. This is likely part of his design, to avoid causing injury or distress by accident, but his extreme care at something as simple as maneuvering his pudgy body out of a corner can come across as rather comical at times. Not that Baymax minds looking comical, or otherwise awkward or foolish, especially if it improves someone's emotional state, and has stated that, as a robot, he's incapable of being offended.

Baymax is polite and courteous to everyone. Or at least tries to be. Sound medical treatment comes first, and he's not above, say, flopping against someone who's cold and wet and to warm them up with his internal heaters. Post movie, he's gotten better about asking before doing such things (usually), but it still can be a bit awkward sometimes. He dislikes causing anyone distress, however, and will quickly apologize if he does so. His voice seldom wavers from its normal gentle, even, soothing tone, and his actions are equally gentle such as when hugging or holding someone, the latter being an extension of his above mentioned caution. He was designed to basically be as non-threatening as possible, and it shows.

Being designed to be able to learn and adapt, Baymax is somewhat curious and easily distracted by new things, sometimes at inappropriate moments, such as wandering off after a butterfly in the middle of a demonstration of his new super-hero armor. But this is more endearing than detrimental (especially since he can focus when necessary), and has certainly helped the development of his personality. This has led to the development of a fondness for cats (particularly Hiro's cat, Mochi) as well as the discovery of the game of chess, which he likes to play in his free time.

Baymax's medical programming forbids him from harming a human, and though many of Nautilus' residents are not human and thus not technically included in this directive, Baymax will include them anyway, the simple reason being that he just doesn't want to hurt anyone. A basic precept of medicine is 'First, do no harm,' and it's one Baymax lives by. He will refuse any attempt to make him violate this directive, disallowing access to his datacore to anyone he believes intends to alter his programming to that effect. No one is exempt from this rule, not even Baymax's closest friend, Hiro.

In short, as stated above, Baymax cares. He cares about everyone around him, human or otherwise, and does his best to see to their health and well being, even if it's sometimes not entirely in line with their wishes. He's warm, compassionate, protective, devoted, and downright lovable. Everything you could ask for in a robot buddy, or a superhero.

Powers and Abilities: Baymax is capable of lifting up to 1000 pounds. He has been programmed with over 10,000 medical procedures, and has various built in equipment to help him perform them, such as medication dispensers in his fingers and defribrillators in his palms. He can also download additional information by placing his hand on a computer tower or similar device and initiating an uplink. His programming can also be augmented by the addition of more datacards in the drive accessed via the port on his chest, though Baymax may resist the addition of programming that conflicts with his original medical directive, and will not allow removal of that primary datacard. He has a medical scanner that can read all of a person's vital data (everything from height and weight, to blood type, cholesterol levels, allergies, and neurotransmitter levels) in seconds to aid him in diagnosis and treatment. He is capable of recording anything he sees and hears, and can play back either video footage or still images by projecting them onto his big, white belly from within.

While armored, the range of Baymax's scanner is greatly increased to the point where he can scan an entire city full of people at once, if given a high-enough vantage point, and pinpoint a single individual who matches the results of a previous scan. In this mode, he is also equipped with wings on his back and rocket thrusters in his boots, allowing him to fly, and a gauntlet that can be launched via its own built in thrusters for a rocket-propelled fist attack.

Baymax does not require food or sleep; he only needs to stand in his charging station (which can be plugged into an ordinary wall outlet) for a few minutes to fully replenish his power supply (apparently Tadashi took Hiro's advice about those super-capacitors). He'll probably need to get in touch with a tech-savvy person capable of performing maintenance on his systems or repairing him if need be, though. Also, all his medical knowledge is human based, so when face with the various varieties of non-humans in the city, he'll have to start his medical database on them from scratch if no downloads are available.

Hello, citizens of Nautilus. I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion. Summer is here, and with it long, sunny days.

But while moderate sunlight is an excellent source of Vitamin D for humans, please exercise caution while enjoying outdoor activities. Always wear sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or more if you are going to be spending time outdoors and wear appropriate clothing as needed. Also, always wait one hour after eating before swimming and remember to drink plenty of water; hot weather presents an increased risk of dehydration.

If you see someone who you believe is suffering from the effects of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, please get them to a cool, indoor location and contact medical help immediately. I will be glad to offer assistance in these cases.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions about hot weather safety.

Also, Doctor, the plants in the medical bay lobby are growing at an abnormal rate again and beginning to engulf the furniture. It may be wise for you to correct this.

Third Person: Baymax stood in one spot, looking around the medical bay lobby. He focused first on the plants that adorned the walls and stood around in pots, analyzing them to make certain that none of them could be potentially harmful. He soon concluded that barring a patient with very specific allergies, they should not cause any harm, even if ingested. Good. That meant he could largely leave the plants as they were; the Doctor was extremely fond of them, and the presence of plants was shown to put people more at ease, but he couldn't leave potential health hazards in the open when such a wide variety of individuals used the medical bay.

He then turned his attention to the furniture. All of it was structurally sound, but Baymax Bent the chairs to be more comfortable and supportive to the lower back, as well as making them slightly larger and making the design smoother. He also changed their color, altering them to be a subtle pattern of blues and purples. Along with the green of the plants, the cool colors gave the lobby a more pleasant and relaxing feel.

Near the sitting area, he Bent up a rack which contained a selection of books and magazines. There were a wide variety of selections available, including everything from superhero comics, to magazines like Popular Science and more technical publications, to fashion magazines and romance novels. In the center of the sitting area's coffee table was a smaller rack which contained a changing array of pamphlets on healthcare topics. Most of them seemed to deal with hot weather safety to begin with, given the time of year.

In a corner of the lobby not far from the seating area, Baymax also Bent up a snack bar area. He began with several vending machines; their style seemed to be influenced by that of Japanese vending machines, and they featured 'kawaii' characters on them. One dispensed hot drinks: tea, coffee, and hot chocolate (the last made with milk, because it was healthier). The second dispensed various bottled cold drinks. No sugary sodas there though; instead they offered a selection of fruit juices as well sparkling water and ordinary bottled water. The third machine dispensed healthy snacks like nuts and dried fruit, though interestingly enough, it also offered Jelly Babies. Next to them was an area of counter space which contained all the necessary condiments and accessories like napkins, coffee creamer, straws and cup lids; everything one would need for a light snack and a drink.

Once finished, Baymax looked over his work. Things may need adjusted further as he became more accustomed to his patients' specific needs, but for now, he was quite satisfied. Bending made him a better healthcare companion.
